Driving back into the city, a friend observed that whenever we venture outside the city limits, it's like a bizarre world. There's actual landscape (forests, stretches and stretches of non-polluted water) and houses. Once you've had a taste of that and come back into the belly of the beast, your entire attitude becomes, "Ugh! There are so many people! Why do I even live here?" Then after a day of readjustment, when you get back into the rhythm, you realize, "Oh, this is why." It's part of you to be living in this hectic city. It is you. And then you return to the cynical and bitter New Yorker that you are (or have become) and curse at all the slow walking tourists. |
