![]() I just finished reading Shutter Island, and my heart was pounding near the end. I've never read any books by Dennis Lehane before, but I have to say, we're off to a good start! He also wrote Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, both turned into films, and yes, Shutter Island will be also be a film. I picked up the book mainly because I saw the trailer, and when you combine Martin Scorsese with a case of the heebie-jeebies, I'm in. And also, I just really love Martin Scorsese. Anyway, I really enjoyed the book. I haven't read any thrillers/mysteries/scary novels in a while, and whenever I do, I get really into it, trying to figure everything out while simultaneously being captivated by the story. A few times I went, "WHAT!" and "Agh!" and "I don't know who to believe! Stop playing with my mind, Lehane!" Two of my favorite quotes in Shutter Island were these: "Those eyes, Teddy thought. Even frozen in time, they howled. You wanted to climb inside the picture and say, 'No, no, no. It's okay, it's okay. Sssh.' You wanted to hold her until the shakes stopped, tell her that everything would be all right." (44) "Teddy laughed, heard the sound of it carry off on the sweep of night air and dissolve in the distant surf, as if it had never been, as if the island and the sea and the salt took what you thought you had and..." (70) I just liked how he wrote those; they really captured the... essence? Aura? Mood, of the story. I thought I'd get nightmares from reading it before I went to bed, but not too much. (The Shining still stands as the most frightening book I've ever read. Jeebus, just thinking about it gives me the chills.) I was, however, so engrossed in the book that I almost missed my subway stop a few times this past week. No TrackBacksTrackBack URL: http://www.toastier.org/cgi-bin/mt/mt-tb.cgi/433 |
